RESCONI implements “Reforestation of degraded lands and riverine vegetation for improved climate resilience.” project

The Resource Conservation Initiative (RESCONI) is implementing a project titled “Reforestation of degraded lands and riverine vegetation for improved climate resilience.”

The project is being undertaken in Atwima Mponua and Asutifi North Districts in Ashanti and Ahafo Regions respectively. The communities involved are Ahwianfutu, Ampemkrom, Achiase, and Adobewura in the Atwima Mponua District, whereas in the Asutifi North, the communities are Kenyase, Obengkrom, and Donkorkrom.

The project commenced on January 2024 with a planting target of 70,000 indigenous trees over an area of 175 hectares. The planting involved mixed species such as Mansonia altissima (Oprono), Khaya senegalensis (Mahogany), Terminalia superba (Ofram), Terminalia ivorensis (Emire), and Triplochiton sclerexylon (Wawa). The target land use systems for this restoration are mainly natural forests, agroforests and riverine vegetation.
A total of 48,178 trees have been planted in both the Atwima Mponua and Asutifi North Districts from January 1, 2024, to the end of the 2025 planting season. In Atwima Mponua District, a total of 28,585 trees have been planted, comprising the following: Khaya senegalensis (Mahogany—7,290), Terminalia ivorensis (Emire—9,040), Terminalia superba (Ofram—11,365), and Mansonia altissima (Oprono—890).

In the Asutifi North District, 19,593 trees have been planted: Khaya senegalensis (Mahogany – 5,780), Terminalia ivorensis (Emire – 7,620), Terminalia superba (Ofram – 5,815), and Mansonia altissima (Oprono - 378). The areas where the trees have been planted have been geo-referenced and uploaded in the greenhouse for ease of monitoring.

RESCONI, on September 10, 2025, hosted Daniel Kwaku Owusu, Data Quality Analyst for the Ghana Cocoa Belt from the World Resource Institute (WRI), as part of the monitoring activities under the TerraFund for the AFR100 Project. The main objectives of the field visit were to:
i. Validate implementation progress and provide targeted capacity-strengthening support.
ii. Generate actionable insights to inform learning and project improvement.
iii. Community engagement to discuss successes and challenges of the project implementation.
iv. Site visit to selected farms.
The RESCONI team was led by the Project Manager, Isaac Kwabena Osei, and a total of five (5) farms located at Obengkrom were selected by TerraFund for the monitoring and verification. The polygons of five (5) randomly sampled farms were selected, and the trees planted were verified by TerraFund using GIS tool and geo-tagged photos of the trees planted were taken as evidence of planting. The farmers were on-site during the field visit. The WRI Team walked through each of the selected farms to capture evidence of planting.
